Using evidence in a debate means selecting credible sources, integrating them so the source supports your warrant rather than substitutes for it, citing them in a way the judge can verify, and being able to defend the evidence if your opponent attacks the source or the interpretation.

The short answer to using evidence well: every piece of evidence in your speech should answer three questions before you cite it. What claim does this evidence support? Why is the source credible enough that the judge should weight it? And what would my opponent need to show to undermine it? The Source Quality Hierarchy

Not all evidence weighs the same in front of a judge. The standard hierarchy, from highest to lowest weight:

Tier 1: Peer-reviewed academic research. Studies published in journals with editorial review, replicable methodology, and clear citation. These weigh most because the publication process filters out methodological errors. Cite by author, year, and journal.

Tier 2: Reports from established institutions. World Bank, IMF, OECD, Pew Research, Brookings, RAND, Congressional Research Service, government statistical agencies. These weigh heavily because the institutions have ongoing reputational stakes in accuracy. Cite by institution and year.

Tier 3: Expert testimony from credentialed authorities. Statements by named experts with relevant credentials in the field being discussed. A climate scientist on climate, an economist on monetary policy, a constitutional scholar on legal interpretation. Cite by name, credential, and source where the testimony was delivered.

Tier 4: Investigative journalism from credible outlets. Reuters, AP, BBC, major national newspapers with separation of news and opinion. Investigative pieces with named sources and editorial standards weigh more than wire reports of single events. Cite by outlet and date.

Tier 5: Government data and official statistics. BLS, Census, Eurostat, national statistical agencies. These weigh heavily for empirical claims but require careful framing — the data measure what they measure, not what you want them to measure.

Tier 6: Think-tank advocacy reports. Lower-weight evidence because the institution has policy preferences that shape methodology. Acceptable when used and labeled clearly. A Heritage Foundation report on tax policy is admissible evidence; presenting it as neutral is not.

Tier 7: Opinion writing and commentary. Op-eds, blog posts, podcasts. Useful for citing the existence of an argument or framing but not for empirical claims. "Krugman has argued X in his New York Times column" is acceptable; "Krugman proves X" is not.

Below the line: Wikipedia, social media posts, undated websites, AI-generated summaries without source links. Not usable in serious debate. Citing Wikipedia in a competitive round signals to the judge that the speaker did not do real research, regardless of whether the underlying claim is true.

The hierarchy is not absolute. A peer-reviewed study with serious methodological flaws weighs less than well-sourced journalism reporting on the same question. The Integration Pattern: Warrant + Evidence + Impact

The most common evidence mistake is dropping a statistic into a speech without integrating it into an argument. The fix is the Warrant + Evidence + Impact pattern.

Warrant: the reasoning that connects your claim to a real-world mechanism. State the warrant first, in your own words, before you cite the evidence.

Evidence: the source that supports the warrant. Cite the source clearly, give the relevant statistic or finding, and stop. Do not over-cite — a single strong source beats three weak ones.

Impact: the consequence that flows from the warrant being true. State the impact in terms of who is affected, by how much, and why the judge should care.

Worked example, weak vs strong:

Weak: "Studies show that universal basic income reduces poverty by 30%."

Strong: "Cash transfers reduce poverty more efficiently than means-tested welfare because the administrative overhead of means-testing — eligibility verification, benefit conditioning, sanction enforcement — consumes a substantial fraction of the program budget before any cash reaches recipients. The Banerjee-Niehaus experimental evaluation across seven countries (J-PAL, 2023) found that unconditional cash transfers delivered 87 cents of recipient income per program dollar, compared to 41 cents for means-tested equivalents. The impact is that any anti-poverty budget reaches roughly twice as many people in poverty when delivered as cash, which means the rejection of universal cash design is a choice to leave half the affected population unhelped."

The strong version states the warrant (administrative overhead consumes the budget), cites a specific source by author, methodology, and year, and explains the impact in terms the judge can weigh against opposing arguments. The weak version asserts a number without context, cites a generic "studies show," and provides no mechanism that explains why the number is what it is.

Citation Conventions Across Formats

Different debate formats have different evidence-citation conventions. Knowing the convention for your format prevents the avoidable error of citing in a way the judge does not recognize.

Policy debate. Evidence is read from prepared evidence cards with full citation: author, credential, publication, year, and a tag describing the argument. Cards are typically 2-6 sentences of source text plus the citation. Failure to cite fully is grounds for the opposing team to challenge the evidence as inadmissible.

Lincoln-Douglas. Evidence integration is more conversational. Citing "Korsgaard, 1996" once is sufficient; full institutional citation is not required. Philosophical evidence (named arguments by philosophers) is treated like statistical evidence — credibility flows from the philosopher's standing, not just the argument's merit.

Public Forum. Citations are conversational and aimed at lay-judge accessibility. "A 2023 study from Harvard found that..." is acceptable phrasing. Over-citing in PF (full author-journal-year for every claim) signals jargon-heavy circuit conventions that lay judges discount.

World Schools and parliamentary. Brief in-speech citation by source name and year. Long author-credential strings disrupt speech flow and are penalized for style. "The IMF's most recent World Economic Outlook found..." is the standard pattern.

Comparative Evidence: The Move That Wins Close Rounds

Most debaters present their evidence as if no opposing evidence exists. The judge then has to weigh competing evidence on their own, which often defaults to whichever evidence was presented more confidently. The fix is comparative evidence — explicitly weighing your source against the source your opponent has cited or is likely to cite.

The four comparative-evidence moves:

Methodology comparison. "My source uses an experimental design with random assignment across seven countries; my opponent's source uses a single-country observational study with self-reported outcomes. The methodology asymmetry means my source's findings are causally identified while my opponent's are correlational at best."

Recency comparison. "My source is from 2024 using current macroeconomic conditions; my opponent's source is from 2009 using post-financial-crisis data that does not generalize to the current environment. When the underlying conditions have changed, the older evidence is no longer applicable."

Sample comparison. "My source measures the population most affected by the policy — low-income workers in directly impacted industries. My opponent's source measures average effects across the entire labor force, which obscures the distributional impact that is the central question of this debate."

Source-quality comparison. "My source is peer-reviewed in the leading journal in the field; my opponent's source is an advocacy report from an institution with explicit policy positions on this question. The source asymmetry means the burden of proof for my opponent's claims is higher than for mine."

Surviving Evidence Attacks in Cross-Examination

When your opponent attacks your evidence in cross-examination, the attacks fall into a small number of categories. Knowing the category lets you respond efficiently rather than scrambling.

"Your source is biased." The response is rarely to defend the source as unbiased. The response is to acknowledge the orientation, point out that bias does not invalidate methodology, and challenge the opponent to identify a specific methodological error rather than gesture at the institutional affiliation. "The source has a known policy orientation. The methodology is peer-reviewed and replicable. If you have a methodological objection, name it; institutional source is not itself a methodological objection."

"Your source is outdated." The response depends on whether the underlying conditions have changed. If they have not, the date does not matter — a 1990 study on a stable phenomenon is still valid. If they have, acknowledge the limitation and contextualize: "The study is from 2018, but the mechanism it identifies — administrative overhead in means-testing — has not changed in the intervening period. If you have evidence that the mechanism no longer operates, present it."

"Your source does not say what you claim." This is the most dangerous attack because it can be true if you have over-extended the source. The defense is to quote the source language directly, narrow your claim to what the source actually supports, and concede any over-extension before the judge notices. Conceding gracefully is much less costly than being caught.

"Where is your source?" In policy debate, you must produce the card. In other formats, you must be able to name the author and publication clearly enough that the judge can verify. Vague citation that cannot be verified will be discounted by experienced judges.

The Mistakes That Cost Rounds

Citing without integration. Dropping "Harvard study found 30% reduction" without explaining the mechanism, sample, or impact. Judges discount uninterpreted statistics.

Over-citing. Reading three studies that say the same thing instead of one strong study with deeper integration. Quantity is not weight.

Mismatched evidence. Citing a study about American adolescents to support a claim about European adults. The mismatch is the first thing experienced judges spot.

Stale evidence. Citing 2010 statistics on technology adoption in 2026. If the underlying phenomenon evolves, old evidence becomes evidence against you.

Fabricated evidence. In all formats, fabricating evidence is grounds for disqualification and reputation damage that follows speakers across tournaments. Do not invent statistics, attribute statements to authors who did not make them, or paraphrase sources in a way that distorts the original meaning.

Evidence without warrant. Presenting a number as if the number is itself the argument. The number is the support; the warrant is the argument. Without warrant, the number is decoration.

Single-source dependence. Building an entire contention on one piece of evidence. If the opponent successfully attacks the source, the entire contention collapses. Strong cases use multiple converging sources for each contention.

A Workflow for Evidence Use in a Round

The pre-round, in-round workflow that strong debaters use:

Pre-round (during prep time).

  • Identify the 2-3 contentions you will run
  • For each contention, select 1-2 strongest pieces of evidence
  • For each piece, write the warrant in your own words before the evidence
  • For each piece, draft the impact statement after the evidence
  • For each piece, identify the most likely opposing attack and pre-write the response
  • During your speech.

  • State the contention claim clearly
  • State the warrant in your own words
  • Cite the evidence with source, year, and one-sentence finding
  • State the impact in terms of who is affected and by how much
  • If time permits, add a comparative-evidence move
  • During opposing speeches.

  • Flow each piece of evidence the opponent cites
  • Note any over-extensions (claims the source likely does not support)
  • Note any source-quality weaknesses (advocacy organizations, outdated sources, sample mismatches)
  • Prepare comparative-evidence rebuttals for the strongest opposing evidence
  • During cross-examination.

  • Ask for sources on the opponent's strongest claims
  • Probe for methodology and sample
  • Lock in concessions on source limitations
  • During your rebuttal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How much evidence should a single speech contain? For substantive speeches in most formats, 3-5 well-integrated pieces of evidence is the standard. More than 8 typically signals over-citing without integration. Reply and summary speeches use less new evidence and more weighing.

    Can I cite my own knowledge without a source? Generally no. "Common knowledge" claims need to be uncontested empirical facts (the year World War II ended) rather than contested empirical claims (whether economic policy X has effect Y). When in doubt, cite.

    What about AI-generated evidence summaries? Treat AI summaries as a research starting point, not a citable source. Always verify the AI summary against the primary source, and cite the primary source rather than the AI tool.     Is there a citation style debate uses? Less formal than academic citation. The standard is that the judge or opposing team can locate the source from the citation given. Author-year-publication is sufficient in most formats; full URL or DOI is not expected in oral delivery.

    What if my opponent has stronger evidence than mine? Acknowledge it, then make the comparative move on a different dimension. If their source is more recent, attack the methodology. If their methodology is stronger, attack the sample. If the sample is stronger, attack the framing. Concede on the dimension where you cannot win and fight on the dimension where you can.
